The Pets for the Elderly Foundation (PFE) is a 501 (c)(3) public charity on a mission to provide companionship to seniors through the adoption of animals. The program began in 1992 with only two shelters near Cleveland, Ohio. Since then the foundation has grown to national status. It has been instrumental in placing close to 57,000 animals in the homes and hearts of seniors.
The Pets for the Elderly Foundation helps pay the fees to the various participating animal shelters throughout the United States for seniors 60 and over who adopt a companion dog or cat. Sadly, it has been found that loneliness is the most serious health condition of the elderly. Through Pets for the Elderly, this is certainly a curable condition. Caring for pets often gives seniors a purpose and something worthy to look forward to. Pets offer unconditional love and provide devoted companionship and joy to an otherwise lonely senior. In this program, both the animal and senior benefit immensely! Currently, 46 shelters in 27 states are participating in the Pets for the Elderly program.
